I have been having the most fun this week. I have been scouring threads for visuals that I find interesting and then writing music inspired by them.
If I rewind a touch so I can add some context here.
I have been writing music for about 20 years professionally. When I started I was hired as a bespoke composer for the publisher Boosey & Hawkes (B&H) who had a sync team that I worked with.
Each day I would get sent a brief. This music brief was actually a music search sent to the team at B&H. They would send it to me and ask if I had anything for it.
I would then reply saying "sure thing" and I would quickly write some music to go with the visuals.
I did not win 99% of the pitches but sometimes I did. Either way I was very happy constantly creating new music and trying new things.
As an established composer I stopped pitching for things like this. Partly because I moved more into trailers and custom work there is much more demanding and also because I was enjoying not having to work for my work if that makes sense?
Anyway, here I am again, taking clips from creators and (re)scoring them.
This has 4 huge upsides:
- I feel inspired to create
- I get to practice my skills
- I get to make new connections
- I build a portfolio of new music
I have bolded those 3 words as I feel that they are the foundations of every single composer's work (and any creative for that matter).
In a nutshell I am trying to combine building a portfolio with networking and marketing.
This is the root of it.
For too long those three things (making music, networking, marketing) have felt like separate and disparate things that were like oil and water.
This feels like I have found a cheat code, well hopefully.
Anyway, here are the ideas I have produced this week.

Pablo's World
This one is quite fun. Pablo's World was created by Pablo Stanley It's a playable online game so play my music and play the game - scoring done.
